2026 Eureka Fishing Outlook with Northwind Charters

Welcome to 2026, fishing enthusiasts! As winter starts to settle and we look toward the horizon, it’s time to talk about what we’re expecting for the upcoming fishing season here in Humboldt County. We hope you can make it out on the water this year – especially if it’s with us!

Whether you’re a regular on the Fishy Business or looking to book your first trip with us out of Woodley Island Marina, there is plenty to be excited about this year. From the rugged depths of Cape Mendocino to the calm waters of Humboldt Bay, here is our take on the state of the salt as we head into spring.

The Big Question: 2026 Salmon Season Status

We know. We know. Everyone asks and it’s the first thing on everyone’s mind: What’s happening with the Salmon in 2026?

As of right now, we are in the “wait and see” period. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) typically finalizes the ocean salmon season in mid-April after the federal meetings conclude. We try to update everybody via our newsletter and website once we hear what the season is going to be like but feel free to reach out too.

While recent years have been bleak for salmon fisherman, there’s always hope for a few “bubble” seasons or limited openers. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the things and will update you the second we get the green light. In the meantime, there should be plenty of groundfish and other species to keep you busy and well fed.

Groundfish & Rockfish: All Depths are Back!

One of the biggest wins for Northern California anglers heading into 2026 is the restored access to our nearshore reefs. Thanks to updated regulations that went into effect late last year, we can now fish for the RCG Complex (Rockfish, Cabezon, and Greenling) and Lingcod in all depths within state waters.

For those of you thinking about booking a fishing trip with us, this means more time with lines in the water at our favorite spots around Cape Mendocino. “The Cape” remains the crown jewel of the North Coast, and because of its remote location, it doesn’t see the same pressure as other areas. Expect fast-paced action and plenty of limits when the fishing season officially kicks off on April 1st.

Halibut Outlook: Humboldt Bay and Beyond

Halibut fishing is a Northwind specialty, and 2026 is shaping up to be another banner year.

  • California Halibut: These Humboldt Bay heavyweights are a blast to catch and even better to eat. We expect the bite to be reliable as always and Captain Matt will keep his eye on the weather and target them accordingly.
  • Pacific Halibut: The “Barn Doors” are the main event in the deep water and it’s best to check out the Northwind Charters Instagram for the latest

The Summer Wildcards: Albacore Tuna

If you’ve never experienced an Albacore run, 2026 might be your year. These bad boys usually show up between July and November, depending on where the warm blue water pushes in. These trips are weather-dependent and require a bit of a run, but the payoff is some of the most exciting (and exhausting) fishing you’ll ever do.

Join Us on the Fishy Business

Captain Matt has been working hard through the off-season to ensure the Fishy Business is dialed in and ready for the salt. We pride ourselves on being a family-friendly charter that caters to all skill levels—from pro anglers to kids catching their very first fish.
