After several years of waiting, some of the best news in recent memory has landed for North Coast anglers: salmon season is back.
For those of us who fish these waters, the return of a summer salmon opener is more than just another fishing season—it’s a victory for conservation and patience. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife worked with fisheries managers to carefully reopen the salmon fishery this year, prioritizing sustainable fishing practices that let these incredible fish populations continue to recover. This isn’t just good news for anglers. It’s a sign that the work being done to protect these species is actually working.
And the timing couldn’t be better. Right now, rockfish and halibut are already open and producing great fishing. Add salmon to the summer mix, and 2026 is shaping up to be the kind of fishing year we’ve been dreaming about.
Book Now for Rockfish & Halibut
If you’ve been thinking about getting out on the water, now is the time. Our fishing trips out of Eureka are available for booking, and conditions are solid.

Rockfish remain one of the most reliable and fun species to target from the Fishy Business. The action around Cape Mendocino is consistent, and whether you’re looking for a fast-paced day pulling limits or introducing kids to saltwater fishing, rockfish deliver. We’re seeing great success in our favorite deep-water haunts, and Captain Matt knows exactly where the fish are hiding.
Pacific halibut are in the mix too, and these barn-door fighters are what dreams are made of. The combination of solid rockfish action with the chance at halibut makes for an exciting day on the water. For those who prefer staying closer to home, California halibut fishing in Humboldt Bay continues to be productive and accessible for a shorter trip.

The Return of Salmon Season
Salmon season opens June 13 and runs through July 19, with an additional August 1–31 window.
This is the Klamath-Mendocino Zone (KMZ) season, and it’s real. After years of closures driven by conservation concerns, the improved health of Sacramento River and Klamath River Chinook populations has made this reopening possible. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Pacific Fishery Management Council approved a sustainable season that allows anglers like us to participate while protecting the long-term recovery of these stocks.

The specifics:
- Season dates: June 13–July 19 and August 1–31
- Bag limit: Two salmon per day
- Species: Chinook salmon (minimum 24-inch size)
- Area quota: 3,900 fish for the KMZ
That quota might sound modest, but it reflects the careful balance between opportunity and conservation. In-season management allows CDFW to monitor the fishery and adjust if needed—meaning managers can extend the season or close it early depending on how the bite develops. The point is, after the lean years, we finally have a legitimate summer salmon opportunity.

Why This Matters for North Coast Fishing
Salmon fishing is what built the reputation of places like Eureka and the North Coast. These fish are the crown jewel of our ocean. Pulling a fat Chinook in the summer sun, feeling that rod bend—that’s the fishing we grew up dreaming about.
The reopening of this season tells a bigger story. It means the protection and restoration work of the last few years actually moved the needle. The fish are coming back. Conservation works. And best of all, we get to participate in it.
For a charter operation like Northwind, it means we can offer our clients something special this summer. A chance to fish for a species that’s been off-limits. A chance to be part of a healthy fishery. A chance to do what we love with people we care about.
